Objects are toggled when clicked, no need to press the shift key. Empty-space clicks do nothing. The only way to clear the selection is through API calls

Multiselection requires the shift key to be pressed. Not using the shift key resets the selection to the clicked object. Empty-space clicks also reset the full selection state
